The results of the 2012 Agricultural Census were released last week, showing the trends that have been plaguing us in recent years. Since the last data was recorded in 2007, the number of farms and amount of land in farms has decreased, especially in areas traditionally rich in agriculture. The size of farms and age of principal-operator farmers has increased.
The silver-lining is that the number of beginning farmers has increased slightly. Let’s work now to save the land we have left and find solutions to get those young next generation farmers into solid land tenure situations.
